What's New in Odoo 18 — And Should You Upgrade?
Odoo 18 was released at Odoo Experience in Brussels on October 2-4, 2024. Oakland has been testing it since early access and has already migrated several clients. Here's our honest assessment of what's genuinely useful, what's marketing, and whether you should upgrade now or wait.
Features That Actually Matter for UAE Businesses
AI-Powered Lead Scoring in CRM
Odoo 18's CRM uses AI to automatically score and rank leads by conversion likelihood, based on your historical data. For UAE companies with high lead volumes (particularly in real estate, services, and e-commerce), this means your sales team focuses on the leads most likely to close instead of working the list top-to-bottom. It's not magic — you need 6+ months of historical data for it to work well — but it's a genuine productivity improvement.
Yearly Manufacturing Planning
MRP in Odoo 18 now supports yearly production planning with automatic replenishment using maximum batch sizes. For UAE manufacturers with seasonal demand patterns (construction materials spike in winter, lubricant exports increase in Q3), this enables better capacity and raw material planning months ahead instead of week-by-week firefighting.
Improved Barcode Scanning
Odoo 18 lets you scan multiple items at once and create new products on-the-fly by scanning an unrecognized barcode. For UAE warehouses and distribution centers with high-volume receiving, this eliminates the 'stop, search, create product, then scan' workflow that slowed down goods receipt.
Advanced PO Matching in Accounting
A new screen for manually matching open purchase order lines to vendor bill lines. Sounds small, but for UAE importers who receive one container shipment against multiple POs, or one bill covering partial deliveries from several POs, this screen saves hours of manual reconciliation per month.
Passkey Login
Passwordless authentication via passkeys (biometrics, hardware keys). For companies with warehouse and shop floor users who struggle with complex passwords on shared devices, this is a practical security improvement.
Nice but Not Essential
UI redesign (cleaner but familiar), Combo Products for bundled pricing (useful for retail/e-commerce), sales commissions module (nice for teams with complex commission structures), and Click + Collect improvements for e-commerce. These are welcome improvements but unlikely to justify an upgrade on their own.
Should You Upgrade?
Upgrade Now If:
You're on Odoo 15 or earlier (reaching end of support). You have heavy manufacturing needs and want yearly planning. Your CRM has high lead volume and you'd benefit from AI scoring. You're doing a major expansion (new modules, new entities) — easier to add modules on the latest version.
Wait If:
You're on Odoo 17 and everything works. You have heavy custom modules that haven't been tested on 18 yet. You're in the middle of a busy season (never upgrade during peak operations). Your third-party apps haven't released Odoo 18 versions yet. Oakland recommends waiting until at least Odoo 18.2 or 18.3 for production systems — early point releases fix edge cases that affect real-world deployments.
Migration Considerations
Custom modules require migration scripts. Deprecated methods and changed signatures mean existing customizations may break. Oakland recommends: staging environment migration first, thorough UAT testing with real business scenarios, and a weekend cutover with rollback plan. Budget 2-4 weeks for migration including testing. Contact Oakland for a migration assessment — we'll evaluate your custom modules, third-party apps, and data complexity before quoting.
